New in Kitchens

The Ikea booth at the Interior Design Show was really well done. They used their new Sofielund grey kitchen cabinets with a horizontal grain and a grey solid surface counter on the massive island. I loved the clean lined design of the kitchen combined with the homey accessories on the island which made it warm and inviting.

I thought this was a good example of where I think design in kitchens is going. I noticed a lot of streamlined cabinetry, flat fronted doors and warmer colours. White is still popular (I mean who doesn't love a white kitchen?), but with the introduction of grey lower cabinets and mid-toned counters instead of the ultra white we have been seeing lately.

I also saw a new type of country style emerging, not in the cabinetry, but in how kitchens are styled and accessorized. Notice how the island is filled with rustic pottery crocks, an antique scale and natural elements like the pears and topiaries.

  • Neutral finishes
  • Mixing of metals
  • Touches of black
  • Country accents
  • Warm colours
Clean modern bones with country touches.

Hectar light. $24.99
This grouping of the Ikea Hectar light looked amazing over the island. I am sure this many lights would significantly increased your electrical bill, but 5 or 7 of them at different heights over a big dining table could give you the look for less!

Happy Friday everyone!

I am deep into construction over at the new house. The basement is framed, the duct work is in and today and tomorrow the electrical is being installed. This weekend I am also on the hunt for bathroom fixtures.

What's up for your weekend?
