Small Space

I feel like I keep saying it, but I love small spaces. This apartment may be small, but it makes up for the lack of space with charm. Take a visit over to the Canadian House and Home site for a video tour. Katelyn Jarrett of Peaks and Rafters did an amazing job. I really appreciate how she incorporated family heirlooms and antiques into a youthful space full of bright colour.

Balcony Inspiration

I am trying to finish off our tiny balcony at the condo in the city. It's only about 4 1/2 feet by 8 feet so space is very limited.  So far I have purchased a love seat and a chair with upholstered cushions in grey and a few small tables for drinks. When I am done I will post lots of photos, until then here are a few inspiration shots that I have gathered.

Design: Traditional Rugs

 

I thought the caption on this ad was interesting. Design styles seem to come and go so quickly these days that it is impossible to keep up. Even if one has unlimited funds it really doesn't make sense to follow trends too closely or to redecorate just for the sake of keeping up with what's "hot" in magazines. The pendulum swings from super modern to traditional and everything in between in what seems like a heart beat.

 I have to keep reminding myself...

 that nothing is really "in" or "out"

to buy only what I love

to reinvent older pieces

never to get rid of something classic-I always regret it when I do

 For the last few years brightly coloured graphic rugs have been popular. We saw ikat, bold florals and medallion motifs. Now I've noticed a lot or Persian and traditional styles. I've always loved a classic rug with deep saturated colour; I am so glad I wasn't tempted to get rid of my Persians. I have one in my family room and one is being used in the basement TV area. They are indestructible and age beautifully. My in laws have a rug that has been in the family for 75 years and it still looks amazing. 

Recently I was at a local furniture consignment shop and I saw this rug,

I love the colours. I could see this in a cozy living room or even a boy's bedroom. I was so tempted to buy it, but, of course I don't really need it. (I need a storage locker!!)

It seems that everything old is new again.

Hello, is anyone out there? I just checked my Blogger dashboard and it tells me that a number of people in Canada and the US are reading my blog and a few people from Sweden, Spain, Russia, Australia, Belgium and even Georgia (the country, not the state) have taken a look today.

How can it be that 2 people in the country of Georgia have looked at this blog? (I had to check a map to see exactly where Georgia is).  I am having a hard time comprehending this crazy thing we call the world wide web. I honestly don't believe what my Blogger stats page is telling me. I am a seeing is believing kind of person....oh and I am needy too...so I thought I would test things out by enticing you to comment.
